A black-sand beach is gorgeous, but you wanna make sure you stay on the boardwalk. Even on a cool day, your toes get singed.

Snuck in a little literary time at the hotel bar when the beach turned rainy.

Even the place where you wait for the taxi to the beach is beautiful here, in it’s own way.

Hard to find a better breakfast spread than one that includes pastries, cold cuts, fresh tomatoes, local cheeses, and just-squeezed orange juice.

We were interested in watching sunset in Oia, but couldn’t find a good spot. We kept walking and walking, until we found a little hole-in-the-wall that had an open table. It turned out to be the perfect view. I can’t believe it wasn’t mobbed, considering the crowds everywhere else. (via Vimeo)

My best traffic ever. Thanks…

MaximumAlexBain.com had 501 unique visitors last week.

  • The previous best was 384, so this represents a 30% jump.
  • The pictures from the previous best week, included pics from a (dating) anniversary weekend in NYC and from a Labor Day wedding in Wine Country.
  • Apparently, the people have spoken, and they want pics of me traveling.
  • I had thought that posting mostly pics of myself and my darling bride was an act of semi-vanity, but I’ll be less shy about it in the future. This reminds me of the time, 18 months ago, that I assumed no one would care about my random musings when I added the Twitter badge to the site. Well, visitors actually tripled within a week, and the level never dropped back down.
  • The traffic spiked the day after our wedding, before I’d started posting a lot of pics, so it seems that people expected me to be putting up wedding/honeymoon images. Glad I held up my end of the bargain :-)
  • The traffic was highest right after the wedding. This means one of two things:
    1. People are mostly interested in wedding pics, and perhaps they’re interested because they think they might be in those pics. Or…
    2. When Shalyn, the Maid-of-Honor, mentioned this site in her toast, curious friends and family checked it out for the first time. Seems possible, since the % of traffic from first time visitors has gone from 15% last week to 26% this week.
  • If I can take away anything from this, it’s that I should travel more, post more pics (especially of Lisa, and especially of her in exotic locales), and that I should just generally post more often.

Thanks for visiting. Let me know if there’s anything in particular you’d like to see more of.

Here’s the payoff for all the work and timing that goes into getting into perfect position for the sunset.

Another day, another sweet panoramic of Greek cliffs :-)

We loved this spot that we found to watch the sunset. Not only were the views gorgeous, but all the architecture and colors were so classically Greek. Check out the windmill.

We’ve developed a tradition of getting a big breakfast around 10, then having a light afternoon snack of this great chicken-with-pita plate by the pool to last us to dinner.

Lisa was a little freaked out in our cable-car ride down the Santorinian cliffs, but that didn’t stop me from asking her a few questions on camera. (via Vimeo)

Exchange with Lisa near the end of yesterday

  • Lisa: Can we have the same day tomorrow, minute-for-minute, that we had today?
  • Me: I don't see why not.
We had planned on making a big deal of the sunset the next day, because most of the cafés and restaurants where we were didn’t face West, but then we found this one little spot, tucked around a corner, and happened to arrive right as a couple with the best table was leaving.I told the owner he had a pretty good gig, and he said, “I don’t understand. You don’t have sunsets where you live?”Also, the playlist at this café seemed to be assembled with irony in mind: while we were enjoying an unforgettable natural spectacle, on our honeymoon, in one of the most romantic places on Earth, the first three songs to come on were:“Everybody Hurts” - REM
“Another Day in Paradise” - Phil Collins (really depressing lyrics for a happy title)
“Drive” - The Cars (where the refrain is “Who’s gonna drive you home? Who’s gonna pick you up, when you fall? Who’s gonna hang it up, when you call?”)
I couldn’t make this stuff up.

Goofing around at the docks. This area is largely unchanged in ~80 years. Also, there’s a pretty badass 120’ private yacht under my left hand.

Here’s a fun panoramic from our sunset stroll around Santorini last night.
