Introduction to Twitter
Anyone that’s ever tried to introduce friends or family to Twitter has to field questions like “What should I write?”, “Whom should I follow?”, or “Why would anyone care what about this stuff?”
The best answer to most of these questions is “Just follow some people, and you’ll get the hang out of it.” Which begs the question “But how do I know whom to follow?”
Here was my most recent response to my brother and my buddy, Hutch.
- Celebrities: Unintimidating, because you won’t feel like you’re stalking a normal person, and interesting because they travel, have cool friends, and talk about cool projects…
- Diablo Cody (screenwriter)
- Jimmy Fallon (talk show host)
- Penn Jillette (magician)
- Barack Obama (liberal)
- Lance Armstrong (cyclist)
- Shaquille O’Neil (basketball player)
- Luke Wilson (actor)
- Andy Murray (Brittish tennis star)
- News: Demonstrates that Twitter is not just a social communication medium, but a tool for distributing nearly any info…
- CNN Breaking News: A good example of why you should link Twitter to your cell phone and turn on SMS for some contributors
- RedSoxCast: A great source for breaking Sox news. This account used to provide real-time in-game updates, but that trailed off at the end of last season
- I also might suggest a link to a section of the NYT that interests whomever I’m trying to turn onto Twitter (Links available in the “Following” section)
- Humor: These writers should be funny to just about anyone over 20 and under 40…
- Lonely Sandwich
- Neven Mrgan
- Best At: This is an account that “retweets” the funniest stuff written elsewhere.
Send along the links to these accounts to anyone you’re trying to get into Twitter, and see if they don’t get hooked.
