3 speech patterns I wish I didn't notice
My life would be easier if it didn’t hurt so much to hear the following recurring issues:
- Misuse of Less & Fewer: Fewer of something discrete. Less of something uncountable. I feel like this is just as bad as mixing up “I” and “me”, but it’s a much more common mistake.
- “A whole ‘nother”: ‘Nother is not a word. It’s surprising how often smart people say that.
- The addition of “… kinda thing” in lieu of finishing one’s sentence: As in “The lunch was a chicken salad, turkey, and ham… kinda thing.” I’m usualy 80% clear on what the speaker is getting at, but I could hit 100% if they’d just actually say what they mean.
Does this stuff bother anyone else?
