Birthday stats

In the modern era, it’s become relatively easy to keep track of birthdays. You enter them into a digital calendar, and then you’re reminded every year when they come up. Even easier, with social networking, everyone enters their b-days into the equivalent of one big digital calendar, and the network reminds everyone at the appropriate time. Well, if I told you I was wished a happy birthday 44 times yesterday, how would you guess the greetings came in? I’ll tell you:

  • SMS (text message): 5
  • Email: 15
  • Phone call: 2
  • Facebook: 15
  • In person: 6
  • e-card: 1

I didn’t count in person greetings that came immediately after someone else, because, even though those are very friendly, it’s not a straight comparison. No way to know if the 2nd greeting would have happened without the 1st. Even if you tripple in-person greetings to account for those, though, they barely edge out email or Facebook.

I tried to respond to as many of these as I could, but it was overwhelming. I felt extremely lucky to have such great friends, and it convinced me that I need to do a better job with the b-days of the people I love.

Thanks to all who took the time to make me feel special yesterday.
