SMS gateway: How to send an email from your cell phone

Maybe I’m way behind on this, but I was thinking yesterday that it would be nice to be able to send email reminders to myself when I’m out that I will receive when I get back to my desk.

I Googled “SMS to email”, and found the above link to a page about SMS (“text messaging” or “texting”).

It appears AT&T and T-Mobile both have free services for this already in place.

I just send a text message to “111”, and then follow this format with my message: emailaddress (subject) text

I’ve tried it and it works well.

Great uses for this include:

  • If a gift idea strikes me for someone, I shoot a note to myself so I can comparison shop for it when I get home and buy it online.
  • If I need to shoot someone a long, well thought-out email (the kind I wouldn’t want to write on my iPhone), I remind myself to do it later.
  • If I hear some song lyrics to a catchy tune, I send them to myself so I can look up the name when I get home and buy it on iTunes. I don’t run into this as often since the iTunes Music Store was made available on the iPhone.
  • If I want to remind myself to run an errand that I can’t take care of until I get home (e.g. Pay the rent, take out the trash).

Sounds handy, right?
