Everyone still reads Simmons: No matter how many Karate Kid and Teen Wolf references there were, you still always read him. You still took him seriously, even if it were to trash him. Nobody does that with Jay Mariotti, or Bayless, or Reilly. (Honestly, when’s the last time you seriously read anything by those guys?) They’re easily dismissed. They’ve been mailing in their work for a decade. No one has ever accused Simmons of that.
From Deadspin’s “Bill Simmons, Establishment”.
It’s a good point that other writers slack off after success, but Simmons hasn’t. I’d love more quantitative analysis in his writing (though I’ve been pleasantly surprised by his research for his book), but what his writing lacks in math, it makes back in effort.
He’s mentioned a few times on his podcast that he has a fear of growing stale, which I guess is why he flirted with tv writing, twitter, podcasting, and (these days) a little acting.
I’ve enjoyed everything he’s done (even the cartoons), and hope he keeps it up for ages.
